Before / After
First inspiration
I had recently returned from the International Light Art Congress In Oviedo, Spain, where I saw the most impressive giant light painting done by Frodo from Children of Dark Light and the city at large. This was the first time I saw it so well done and became inspired to do one.
Free Style is a series of improvised variations co-created with Kouro and two other artists on his hilltop parking lot in Nice, France.
Why?
Being a dancer and choreographer, working with people in motion to create an image made a lot of sense, drawing the shapes on the ground as guides, was like teaching the steps and gestures with room for interpretation.
The mandala as my main structure was inspired by Lyonel Kouro, my long time artist friend and animator, who produces stop motion videos of mandalas co-created on a table with colored sand. I liked how the mandala is a universal symbol that includes so many cultures around the world.
